Abstract

A Study on the Questions of Adaptation from the Novel Toji to Other GenresYi, Seung HaThe theme of this paper is to consider the questions from the process that Park, Kyong-ni's novel, Toji, was made into a movie, a television drama, and an epic-musical drama. The movie Toji misunderstood totally the original work regardless of the novelist's intention because it pursued only its box-office value. Especially, the movie overemphasized sexual matters which was represented just suggestively in the novel, and in consequence distorted the original meaning of the novel.The television drama Toji nearly restored the contents of the original work, but it arranged episodes in a row at the most. The drama made longer the first part of the novel and then failed to keep its coherence. Also, it has other problems, such as the standardization of the dialects in the novel and the improbability of characterization.The epic-musical drama Toji made the contents of the novel secondary to songs and Korean classical music orchestra. Because of so large scale orchestra and choruses by too many performers, the drama fail to catch the protagonist's agony and the delicate conflicts between characters.It is not easy that a novel is adapted for other genres. But the audience or the televiewer can memorize clearly the novel Toji through the image and the sound in a movie, through close-up faces and the speech in a television drama, and through songs and music in an epic-musical drama. The reason Toji has been revived through the image and the sound is that the novel has dramatic attribute.
