- Abstract
- In recent years, body-part terms have been an object of investigation in cognitive linguistics. This research investigates elkwul 'face' and some other related words in Korean based on an analysis of the Sejong Corpus data from a cognitive and corpus linguistics perspective. It first discusses the distribution of elkwul and other closely related words nath, anmyen, and myenmok, showing that elkwul is the most frequently used word. Second, this study examines types of modifiers for elkwul, showing that possessives are the most frequently used modifier. Third, based on the distribution of the pre-modifiers, this research characterizes meanings of elkwul in four terms. Fourth, after examining the co-occurrence relations of elkwul with predicates, this study shows the distribution and meanings of the fixed expressions of elkwul. Fifth, it examines metaphoric extension of the meanings of elkwul from a cognitive perspective. Sixth, it also examines modifiers, predicates, and meanings of nath, anmyen, and myenmok one by one. Finally, this research proposes that a corpus-based analysis is useful in characterizing the distribution and co-occurrence relations of face-related words in Korean.
