- Abstract
- This study investigated 374 students' perception tendency and preferences on English Medium Instruction(EMI) course and examined differences between genders and between EMI course takers and regular course takers. Employing PASW 17.0 program, the study analyzed the differences between the groups. The results show that the students would not voluntarily take EMI courses; they had high expectations for the uses of various teaching methods and multimedia and instructors' feedback that were perceived to be unmatched in actual EMI courses. The results indicate that students' needs and preferences on teaching methods and medium significantly differ from what they predict on actual EMI class. This study also shows that the female students would not want to take EMI courses(M=2.47) more than the male students(M=2.85) but the former expected that they would receive feedback related to English and so improve their communicative competence. In addition, they were more likely to prefer the use of multimedia than the male students; however, the male students preferred more active participation activities such as presentations and group discussion(M=3.28) more than the female students(M=3.07). Finally, the results demonstrate that the EMI course takers showed positive attitudes toward the effectiveness of EMI courses on subject matter, motivation, learning activities, compared to the regular course takers. The results of this study imply that students need more support to overcome the fear of taking EMI courses and instructors should carefully design and implement EMI courses to meet students needs and expectations.
