Abstract
In contrast to the large base of research done on Kim, Min Ki's folk music from cultural and sociological standpoints, there is a dearth of research about his music that is approached from an aesthetic consciousness. In this study, his folk music is critically examined to identify how his songs have functioned aesthetically based on historical and cultural viewpoints. The concept of ‘Jung’, which is formed by Koreans’ unique way of life, historical background, and emotional experiences, is carefully explored. The bases of his songs, which became the motives of a Korean movement to seek political and social idealism, are identified by exploring the Korean unique sentiment of ‘Jung’ in his songs. While the purpose of modern folk music is tied to society and social change, the unique Korean emotion, ‘Jung’, expressed through Kim, Min Ki's lyrics, play the major role in his folk music. In conclusion, it is a characteristic of his songs that the unique Korean sentiment, ‘Jung,’ permeated his lyrics and works with aesthetics as a catalyst so that the generation-specific suffering of Kim, Min Ki's time was sublimated, and life itself purified. Kim, Min Ki's songs demand that the listeners experience emotional changes. ‘Jung’ in his songs is a driving force of Korean people’s lives and the conditions of their lives, and it further produces a view of beauty which can help overcome the difficulties of life.
