Abstract
This study aims to explore the academic trends of dance and its social relations. Based on bibliometric methodologies, I analyzed dance literatures - M.A. theses and Ph.D. dissertations in dance, focusing on the frequency of words and themes shown in the total 5,855 literatures. The trends of dance studies are related to the features of research areas changed over the last ten years. They deal with how the dance field establishes relations with other artistic genres, its social functions, cultural industry, and arts management and their development. The results of this research are as follows: The number of dance-related literatures is continuously growing and the researches of Korean traditional dance are higher than those of Western dance. In artistic genres that are related with dance, music is very widely studied and humanities have most connections with dance. The social functions of dance have the highest influence on the educational field. The frequency of words that have connection with education, sports, performance, and cure has been going up more than three times since 2000, showing that the functions of dance have spread over the whole society. In management factor, many researches have focused on performance planning and the life of dancers rather than cost strategies and resources-pooling. From the results, I could expect more focuses on the curative function for body and soul, extended studies of arts management, the use of cultural contents including humanities, and the building up of cross-research system along with traditional research of dance.
