- Abstract
- Otaku means not just liking something or collecting products but finding meaning of object by reinterpreting it. Azuma Hiroki 東浩起 classifies Otaku into 3 generation according to passing time. They are 1st generation which born in 1960s, 2nd generation which born in 1970s and 3rd generation which born in after 1980. Although OTAKU has been changed through generation shift, all of them has been interested in animation.
However, recently, they are absorbed in new genre. That is Vocaloid which means voice synthesis engine. Otaku who like this have unique characteristic. At first, they act like prosumer which means producer and consumer. Originally, OTAKU consumes produets which supplier makes and enjoys contents only by limited material. However, Vocaloid OTAKU produces more various and unlimited contents, commercializes it, and consumes again. This characteristic is different from other Otaku who just consume contents. Also,Vocaloid Otaku are opened and active contrary to other Otaku who closed and passive.
I will take this change as a boundary between traditional Otaku culture and future Otaku culture. Vocaloid based on internet culture and technology will be implication of future Otaku market.
