- Abstract
- 미국의 초등교육은 19세기를 거치며 보편적으로 확산되었다. 조세수입에 기반한 공립초등학교였던 보통학교(common schools)가 전국 각지에 설립되며 초등교육의 팽창을 주도하였고, 19세기 중반 이후로는 수업료의 철폐를 통하여 거의 모든 학령기 백인 아동이 초등교육을 이수하게 되었다. 학계에서는 초등교육의 보편화를 설명하기 위한 시도가 꾸준히 이루어져 왔는데, 최근 경제사학계의 연구 성과에 따르면 지방 분권화와 선거 민주주의의 발전이 미국 초등교육의 확산과정에서 나타난 시대 및 지역별 편차를 설명하는 주요 요인으로 부각되고 있다.
