Abstract
As scientific technologies bring more conveniences, conventional photographers make efforts to try more various expressions of their works by using digital pictures and getting out of their darkrooms. One of those efforts is to use ink jet printers to print pictures out traditional paper called Hanji, which method has come into the spotlight in that it can express traditional and peculiar beauty. Also, Hanji is used to make photoprint of cultural treasures, so its importance as a print medium increases. Hanji is a traditional Korean legacy made of paper mulberry trees. It feels warm and mild, and it is excellent at preserving records. As stated above, studies on evaluating printing properties of Hanji increase as Hanji is used for ink jet printing, but most of those studies are limited to measuring physical properties of Hanji, so the results from those studies are not sufficient enough to be used as visual evaluation items of printing properties. In this study, resolutions of digitalized images of Hanji-based prints were analyzed to evaluate their printing qualities and measure their properties. Hopefully, this study results will be used as basic data to evaluate the qualities of Hanji for ink jet printing by cultural heritage-preservation experts who make photo-prints of cultural treasures and by photographers who want to use Hanji with their ink jet printers and ultimately contribute to more extensive use of traditional and peculiar Hanji in ink jet printing.
