- Abstract
- With ROK-US combined operations under way, there is an urgent issue of how to effectively train Korean military officers for communication with US military officers. It is then extremely important that these officers deliver a very sophisticated command of the English language, but anecdotal evidence tells us that many of them often find it difficult to choose the right lexis and use it appropriately during their communication. This study presents two case studies through which we demonstrate how a corpus-based approach can be used to enhance the teaching of military English, in particular lexical choices through analysing its semantic prosody. Here we focus on one verb (jiwhi-hada / 지휘하다) and one noun (hyup-jo / 협조), the two common Korean words which officers have great difficulty in finding an appropriate English equivalent. In each case study, we first examine its potential English equivalents, and run the statistical analysis to see which equivalent occurs most frequently and fits well in meaning with our target Korean words in the military English corpus. We provide both pedagogical and practical implications for the use of the corpus-based approach in teaching and learning military English.
