Abstract
Purpose: On the domestic scale, research on architecture, urban and design fields from 2000 to today and the legal system were reviewed from a gender perspective. Previous studies indicate that gender sensitivity has been perceived as a narrow idea in the architecture and urban fields of Korea. In this paper, the change in scholarly trends and subjects on ‘Gender and Space’ was analyzed according to the expanded notion of gender sensitivity, and then the gap between the academic and the institutional practice was presented in order to propose the direction of the future research. Method: Selected 114 dissertations and journals among 7,198 papers searched by the keyword ‘Gender, Women’ and ‘Architecture, Urban’ were discussed in this research. Simultaneously, women policy of the central government and the Seoul Metropolitan government such as ‘Women Friendly City’ and the 5 domestic law such as 「National Land Planning and Utilization Act」 and 「Framework Act on Building」 were examined from the gender viewpoint. Result: For the last 20 years, the scope and subject of research on ‘Gender and Space’ have been considerably widened in the architecture and urban fields although a quantity of the papers has been slightly decreased since 2015. Research shows relatively higher gender sensitivity than the present system that still considers women as the object of protection rather than the independent subject. This paper suggests the need for the legal system to achieve gender equality in space that is based on continuous research to improve a biased understanding of gender issues.
