Abstract
Agnès Varda’s essay film in digital age monstrates the changes of filmic form appeared during digital transition era. Most of all, hapticity and interactivity made turning points in her filmmaking. In The Gleaners and I, shot by digital camcorder shows the haptic gaze and tactile sensation connected to hands. This characteristic of moving image notably appears in space image of fields in countryside, factory workshop, and market places in city. This hapticity can be considred as advanced perception of digital and is very remarkable in Varda’s digital essay films. Furthermore, in Faces, Villages, Varda tried to see reality with this haptic sensation beyond vision. When people photographed for themselves in the photo truck. Varda and JR displayed it onto the big wall near to theire habitation. This way of displaying not only shows the intermediality of film and photograph, but also the interactivity between photographer and subject, artist ans her art appreciator. In resume, Varda’s digital essay film suggests the new sensation like hapticity, intermedaility, interactivity. The digital technology developes our sensation and relationship with media.
