분석 미학: 무엇을 어떻게

Abstract

이 글은 ‘분석 미학’으로 불릴 수 있는 현대 영미 미학의 연구 현황을 보고한다. 다양한 분석 미학의 연구 영역들을 언급하고, 그 중 특히 현대에 와서 더 주목 받아야 할 영역들이 무엇인지를 제시한다. 이는 현 시점에서 분석 미학이 무엇을 잘 할 수 있고 또 무엇을 시도해 볼만한지에 대한 점검이다. 또한 그 과정을 통해 매우 느슨하게라도 분석 미학의 방법론적 정체성에 대해서도 생각해 본다. 필자들이 생각한 ‘미래지향적’ 기준에 부합하는 연구 영역들은 감정, 허구, 상상과 창조성이다. 이들이 선택된 이유로는 몇 가지를 들 수 있다. 우선 미학의 모든 논의는 궁극적으로 미와 예술을 가능케 하는 인간적 영역에 대한 탐구라는 시각에서 볼 때, 감정, 허구, 창조성은 인간에 대한 총체적 이해와 관련된 중요 측면이며 따라서 어느 방법론에서건 적절한 미학의 과제이다. 이들은 현대 미학에서 각광받을만한 주제이지만 동시에 가장 오래된 미학의 전통과 연계되어 있다. 그 점에서 이들은 또한 현재 논쟁적으로 분할되어 있는 영미와 대륙 간의 구분을 초월하여 추구될 수 있는 주제들이다. 이들 주제에 대한 본격적인 연구는 여전히 초기 단계에 머물러 있기에, 현 시점의 연구가 새로운 담론의 형성에 기여할 가능성도 있다. 이에 더하여 필자들은 현대 분석 미학의 특징으로 분석 미학이 경험적 연구 성과를 활용하려는 경향을 가질 것이라는 점과 그럼에도 불구하고 미적 속성 및 비평적 진술의 위상을 둘러 싼 메타적 논의는 지속될 것임을 지적한다. 필자들은 이 글이, 예술과 문화에 대한 관심은 공유하지만 철학적 스타일에 따라 그 연구 방식을 달리 취하고 있는 동료 미학 연구자들에게, 함께 같은 장에서 논의해 볼 수 있는 연구 분야를 제안하는 역할을 할 수도 있기를 기대한다.

The article reports the current state of research in contemporary Anglo-American aesthetics, which can be called 'Analytic Aesthetics.' Various study areas and research subjects are mentioned, and some extended overviews on several focus areas are provided. This is a review on what Analytic Aesthetics can do well at this point, and what needs to be done further in the future. It also briefly (and loosely) deals with the issue of what constitutes the methodological identity of analytic aesthetics. We, the authors, select three 'future-oriented' research areas. They are emotion, fiction, and creativity (in relation with imagination). There are several reasons why these are chosen. First of all, since every discussion in aesthetics should ultimately concern understanding of human beings by exploring human aspects that enable arts and aesthetic judgments, these three subjects are legitimate and even essential for any aesthetic investigation. They are linked to the oldest aesthetic tradition. In that regard, they are possibly subjects which can be pursued regardless of the so-called ‘Analytic-Continental’ split. Since full-scale studies on these topics are still in their early stages, there are many stones yet unturned. It is likely that research in this area will contribute to new discourses. As for further characteristics of contemporary Analytic Aesthetics, the authors additionally point out that Analytic Aesthetics would (and should) utilize empirical research results more and more, and that, nonetheless, meta-discourse on the status of aesthetic properties and the nature of critical statements, including critical assessment on the foundations of relativism and pluralism, would continue. The authors hope that this article would be accepted by fellow scholars, who share the same interest in art and culture but take different approaches depending on their philosophical style, as a suggestion for what we can do collectively and cooperatively.
