Abstract
This paper examines the thought of Park Chong-hong during the Japanese colonial period from the perspective of the formation of modernity. Launched in sympathy with cultural nationalism in the early 1920s, Pak's intellectual journey came into contact with imperial academism and developed into a quest for "the dialectical synthesis of logos and pathos". Park sought to make this his personal philosophical goal and the ideological basis for national praxis. He understood logos as the rational activity of reason that cognizes the laws of the world, and affirmed it without reservation. This implies the kind of modernity that is in line with Weber's notion of the disenchantment of the world. On the other hand, Park's understanding of pathos, which corresponds to praxis, went against Western civic modernity in that he subordinated the value of individuals to the nation. As for the dialectical synthesis of logos and pathos, Park believed that it was possible through a reinterpretation of Confucian philosophy. Thus, given that Park sought the direction for his nation from tradition even while continually consulting Western philosophical discourse, his thought during the colonial period amounted to what we may call 'traditional modernity'.
