- Abstract
- In Gender Trouble, Butler criticizes Foucault for returning to a sort of ‘sexual liberation discourse’ analyzed in The History of Sexuality I by romanticizing the world of Herculine in his “Introduction” to Herculine Barbin. This article ascertains that ‘sexual liberation discourse’ was already abandoned while Foucault was problematizing the triad power /body/pleasure beyond the Freudian Left. In fact,Butler’s premature critique of Foucault targets his gender blindness in her feminist perspective. As foucauldian subversion of sexuality evolves into a governmentality in the homosexuality, Butler’s ontological gender perfomativity recognizes at last and practically claims a foucauldian governmental subject. Complementarily, Butler and Foucault thus open a new possibility of the sexual subjectivity.
