Abstract
커피 전문점의 심볼마크에 함의되어 있을 것으로 가정되는 의미를 추적하는 작업은 현대인이 추구하는 가치를 시각적으로 이해하는 방법이 될 수 있다. 연구방법은 퍼스(Ferdinand de Saussure)와 구조주의를 기반으로 한 플로슈(Jean-Marie Floch)의 조형기호학을 적용하였다. 그에 따른 결과는,첫 번째 어떤 개별기호가 지배적 역할을 하는지? 에서는, 주제에 가장 적극적으로 참여하는 기호들은 표현면의 형상들이었다. 이러한 형상들은 다른 구성요소에 비해 크기가 작거나 표현된 위치가 주변일 지라도 풍부한 함축의미와 주제의미를 산출하였다. 두 번째, 심볼마크는 어떻게 의미를 생성하고 있는가? 에서는, ‘원형/녹색/붉은색/원두/싹/나뭇잎/창문/별/웃음/인어’의 형상들로 구성되어, 구조적으로 부정적인 형상들이 대립항을 이루도록 구성되어 있었다. 이런 결과로 주제 또한 ‘긍정/개방/소통/식물/인간/중앙/안정/규칙/다양/가상/상징’과 반대되는 부정적인 주제들이 추출되었다. 세 번째, 표현면과 주제면에 일정한 경향은 존재하는가, 존재한다면 그것은 무엇인가? 에서는, ‘표현’에서는 5개의 심볼 마크가 ‘원형’을, 1개의 심볼마크가 ‘손 멋 글씨체’의 형상으로 선택했다. 이는 ‘긍정의 지향’과 ‘자연성’을 희구하는 가치로 판단되었다.
Tracking down the inherent message in the symbol marks of the coffee shop franchises can be a means for a visual understanding of the values sought for the people living in the modern society. The research methodology utilized the ‘Visual Semiotics’ as introduced by Jean-Marie Floch, which is again based on the structuralism and Charles Sanders Peirce. The result of the study as follows;Firstly, for the identification of the dominant individual symbol within the symbol marks, it was noted that the most active symbols within the subjects were the shapes on the expression side. These shapes were rich in terms of the messages they delivered and the implications thereof, even when the shapes’ size were smaller or located on the margins of the subject symbol marks. Secondly, for the mechanism of creating meanings by these symbol marks, it was noted that these marks were composed of various shapes, such as ‘circles /green /red /coffee bin /bud /leaf /window /star /smile /mermaid,’ in a structural arrangement where the confronting elements were constituting negative components within the symbol marks. As a result, the themes, such as ‘positive /open /communication /plants /human /center /stability /rules /diversity /virtuality /symbols,’ were induced along with negative counterparts of these concepts. Thirdly, we examined whether there was a certain pattern in terms of the expression and the theme, and if there was, what it was. In terms of the ‘expression,’ 5 symbol marks selected ‘circles,’ while one others chose ‘elegant hand scripts.’ We determined these elements were representing the values in pursuit of ‘positivity’ and the ‘Nature.’
