- Abstract
- Purpose: This study analyzed building cooling, heating and lighting energy performance of the photochromic window (PCW) in various climate zones. Method: Office buildings were modeled using DesignBuilder software, which is a building energy analysis program, and four climate regions-Temperate climate, Tropical climate, Marine climate, and Cold climate were selected to test the performance of PCW. Result: Due to the characteristics of U-value and shading coefficient (SC) of PCW, indoor heat loss decreased in winter resulting in a decrease in heating energy consumption. On the other hand, cooling energy consumption decreased due to less transmission solar radiation in summer. As for the lighting energy consumption, the PCW's visible light transmittance (VLT) was lower than the standard clear windows (CW), thus, it was confirmed that the use of artificial lighting increased for satisfying the office indoor illumination standard. Based on the findings in this study, it can be concluded that PCW with higher VLT needs to be developed for improving energy performance as well as maintaining indoor lighting conditions.
