토픽 모델링을 사용한 운동선수 병역특례 언론 보도의 경향 분석

Abstract

본 연구에서는 국제스포츠대회에서 일정 수준 이상의 성과를 거둔 운동선수에게 주어지는 병역특례제도에 대해 어떠한 측면의 이슈를 중심으로 언론 보도가 이루어져 왔는지를 확인하였다. 또한, 병역특례제도가 국민으로부터 공감을 얻으면서 운영되기 위한 개선방안을 세우는 과정에서 언론의 역할이 무엇인지를 파악하고자 하였다. 이를 위해, 2000년 1월 1일부터 2019년 12월 31일까지 보도된 운동선수 병역특례제도 관련 뉴스 3,640건을 토픽 모델링을 사용해 분석하였다. 토픽 모델링으로 10개의 토픽을 산출한 결과, WBC 병역특례, 손흥민 병역특례, 박주영 병역특례, 봉사활동 조작, 2004년 프로야구 병역비리, 인천아시안게임 관련 이슈, 자카르타-팔렘방 아시안게임 이슈, 광저우 아시안게임 이슈, 자카르타-팔렘방 아시안게임 이후의 이슈와 병역특례제도 개선 등에 대한 보도가 주를 이룬 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 토픽 산출 결과는 언론 보도가 특정한 선수 및 그와 관련된 사건에 편향되어 이루어지고 있음을 보여준다. 대중이 언론을 통해 반복적으로 접한 이슈와 관점을 중요하게 여기는 경향이 있는 만큼, 일부 선수와 사건에 국한된 언론 보도는 운동선수 병역특례제도에 대한 대중의 편향적 인식을 심어줄 수 있다. 병역특례제도는 우리나라가 스포츠 강국으로 성장하는 데에 주요한 역할을 해왔으며 직업수명이 짧은 운동선수의 경력단절을 막아주는 기능을 하기도 하는 만큼, 대중이 본 제도에 대한 다각적이고 올바른 정보를 습득할 수 있도록 언론의 균형 있는 정보 제공의 노력이 요구된다.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the significance of media coverage on the exemption from military duty given to male athletes who have achieved a certain level of achievements in international sports competitions. To this end, 3,640 news reports related to the military system for athletes reported from January 1, 2000, to December 31, 2019, were analyzed using the topic modeling method. As the result of computing 10 topics by topic modeling, WBC case, Son Heung Min case, Park Joo Young case, voluntary service manipulation, military irregularity in 2004 professional baseball, Incheon Asian Games, 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games, Guangzhou Asian Games, issues after 2018 and improvement of the system were found to be the main focus of the media coverage. The results show that the news reports were biased toward specific players and their related events. As the public tends to value the issues and viewpoints repeatedly encountered by the media, media coverage limited to particular athletes and events can instill a biased perception of athletes' military system. The exemption from military duty for athletes has played a significant role in Korea's growth as one of the best sporting countries and can prevent career breaks of athletes with short career span. Therefore the efforts to provide more balanced information from the press are required so that the public can acquire various and correct information on the military system for athletes.
