- Abstract
- This study examined how a kinship network affects the conjugal division of domestic labor and whether the influence of a kinship network is changing in Korean families.
The 7th panel of the Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women and Families, collected in 2018, was used. Among the respondents, married women aged between 35 and 64 were selected and sorted into three age groups. ANOVA, Chi-square test, and hierarchical regression analysis were performed. Parents living nearby reduced the proportion of women’s domestic labor for the 35-44 age group, and parents-in-law living nearby reduced the proportion for the 55-64 age group. Siblings living nearby reduced the total hours of domestic labor but raised women’s proportion for the 35-44 age groups, and siblings-in-law living nearby reduced the husbands’ hours for domestic labor and thereby raised women’s proportion for the 55-64 age groups. As described above, the effects of a kinship network on a couple’s division of domestic labor vary with age groups.
This suggests that the normative pressure of patriarchy operated via kinship network is diminishing, being substituted by the new value of gender equality.
