- Abstract
- This study was carried out to inquire the growth process of professional dancers, based on Bourdieu’s cultural capital theory. This study targeted 5 professional dancers, who belong to the state-run municipal dance troupe, and literature considerations and in-depth interviews were conducted from January to March 2020. The study findings are as follows. First, although the participants, who grew as professional dancers were not children from the upper class, the financial support from parents was an important factor. Second, tastes acquired through cultural interests of grandparents or parents and participation encouragement highly influenced their career decision as professional dancers. Third, they were provided with information from instructors and alumni in the dance troupe until they grew as professional dancers, and this means social capitals were formed between them. It is anticipated that these study results can serve as basic data to identify the contribution of cultural capital theory to the cultivation of professional artists in future.
