Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare the effects between woodworking and a drawing activity on young children’s space perceptual and language ability. Forty young children were included in this study as the subjects, and their average age was 71.44(SD=3.80) months. Experimental group1 and experimental group2 were selected randomly. Experimental group1 performed the woodworking activity 16 times, and Experimental group2 did the drawing activity 16 times. 'The space perceptual ability test part' extracted from the ‘Children’s mathematical ability test tool’ and 'Construction Meaning Comprehension Test’ was used to collect data and the independent t-test was used to analyze the data. From the results of this study, it was found that woodworking significantly improves young children's space perceptual and language ability compared to the drawing activity. The results of this study suggest that the woodworking more effectively enhances young children's space perceptual and language ability than that of drawing activities. On the other hand, it was found that the drawing activity significantly improves the recognition ability of the coordinates included in sub-factors of space perceptual ability compared to the woodworking. The results of this study suggest that woodworking is more effective for developing young children's space perceptual and language ability than drawing activities, but that drawing activity can improve specific space perceptual abilities compared to woodworking.
