Abstract
Universities need to support various activities for diverse users, especially for students, and to provide learning environments including meeting places where students can interact each other and study between class hours. The purpose of this study is to investigate where students spend time for study and rest except for the class hours and how to use intermediate spaces such as main lobby, lounge, corridor, stairways for learning and interaction in university campus and their preference. For this study, survey method is used to explore the use pattern of the intermediate spaces in the university campus located in Seoul in 2019. A total of 151 questionnaires were used to analyze type of space for study, reason of space use, preference to physical settings. Data were analyzed using SPSS 24 program. The results showed many students need to stay close in campus for a certain amount of time while they are waiting for lecture. Except for some areas in libraries, there were a few space for study or group works in campus. The intermediate spaces such as lobby, lounge, corridor, hall, spaces near stairways need to support students activities and learning in more appropriate ways. Except for the typical classroom, library and student activity room, more diverse and open spaces need to be provided making use of intermediate areas in the campus buildings. The alternative multi purpose of learning environments can fulfill the need for learning activities and casual interaction in response to student and future institutional needs
