비엔날레; 정치적 연대와 문화 헤게모니의실험실

Abstract

‘비엔날레 천국’으로 불리는 우리나라의 경우 비엔날레에 대한 연구는 대학과 학술단체의 관심에 힘입어 왕성하게 진행되어 왔다. 연구주제 역시 다양한 영역들을 아우르고 있음을 볼수 있다. 가령 비엔날레가 지역정체성에 미치는 영향에서 관광자원으로 지역경제에 미치는 영향에 이르기 까지, 도시재생과디자인에서부터 관람객 연구에 이르기 까지 다양하게 논의되고있다. 하지만 최근 들어 비엔날레를 둘러싸고 중요하게 다루어지는 주제는 비엔날레의 기능과 역할에 관한 것이다. 비엔날레가 이 원론적인 질문에 당면해 있는 것은 비엔날레의 속성과존립이유에 대한 본성적 성찰을 요구하고 있기 때문일 것이다. 이 글은 이러한 비엔날레에 주어진 질문에 답하기 위한 것으로그 논지를 정치사회학적 맥락으로 정했다. 비엔날레는 무엇하는 곳인가? 이 글에서 주장하는 요지는 비엔날레란 ‘정치적 연대와 문화적 헤게모니의 각축장’이라는 것이다. 비엔날레의 정치사회적 맥락이란 비엔날레의 설립과 운영의배경을 살펴보는 일과 다르지 않다. 19세기 후반에 탄생되었지만 20세기에 들어와 비엔날레는 유럽 모더니즘의 영향 아래전지구적으로 파급되었다. 그러나 1980년대 후반에 이르게 되면 비엔날레의 위상은 전과 다른 모습을 띠게 된다. 이른바 냉전체제의 붕괴와 그에 따른 세계질성의 재편은 비엔날레의 탄생과 운영에도 영향을 끼쳤기 때문이다. 때마침 부상한 아시아 지역 국가들의 위상과 더불어 비엔날레의 위상도 크게 달라지게 되었다. 비엔날레는 국가 혹은 지역간의 정치적 연대에 연관된 것이면서도 동시에 대륙 혹은 국가 각지역의 문화적 위상과 헤게모니 싸움으로 나타나면서 비엔날레의 정치는 보다 치열하고 복잡스런 양상으로 나타난다. 이 글은 비엔날레의 전개양상을 모더니즘과 포스트모더니즘두 개의 시기로 구분해 당대에 탄생한 신생비엔날레의 설립 목적과 취지를 정리하는 것에 중점을 두고 있다. 비엔날레의 정치사회적 기능에 대한 연구는 비엔날레의 본성에 대한 고찰이자 앞으로 지속될 비엔날레의 향방을 바로잡기 위한 하나의 대안이 될 수 있다. 이 글의 후반부에서는 2005년에 문을 연 모스크바비엔날레를 사례로 들어 신생 비엔날레에 부여된 역할과과제를 살펴볼 것이다.

In case of Korea called 'a heaven of biennales,' the researches into biennales have been very active owing to the increasing concern on the parts of universities and academic institutions. The themes of research have also encompassed a variety of arts genres. For example, the biennales have been discussed widely, ranging from the effects on the local identities to the tourism resources affecting the local economy, and further, from the urban regeneration through the design to the audience. However, the theme that has lately been discussed importantly is about their functions and roles. The reason why the biennales have been facing such an original question is that people require us to introspect their attributes and raison d'etre. This essay designed to answer such questions about biennales was aimed at their politico-social contexts. What do people do at biennales? This essay argues that the biennales are 'a laboratory for political solidarity and cultural hegemony.' Biennales' politico-social context may well be equated with their establishment and operations. Biennales started in late 19th century, but by the 20th century, they would spread world-wide owing to the European modernism. By the late 1980s, however, they would feature quite a different topology than before. For the collapse of the so-called Cold War system and the reorganization of the international order therefore would affect even the biennales in terms of their birth and operation. Some Asian nations emerged just in time, affecting the topology of biennales. While biennales are closely related with inter-national or intra-regional political solidarity, they feature the struggles among continents or nations or regions for the culural topology and hegemony. In short, the biennale politics has been more fierce and complicated. This essay divides the development of biennales into modernism and post-modernism, and thereby, discusses the purposes and causes of our new contemporary biennales. Any research into the politico-social functions of biennales would involve a discussion of their nature as well as a new alternative for the direction for their future. The latter part of this essay would discusses the roles and challenges facing a new biennale or Moscow Biennale open in 2005.
