인생의 보람과 후회: 성공적 노화여부에 따른 비교

Abstract

이 논문은 노인들이 자신들의 인생을 돌아보면서 느낀 인생의 보람과 행복, 그리고 후회의 내용과 그 의미를 알아보고자 하였다. 특히 성공적 노화를 기준으로 성공적 노화노인과 실패노인 두 집단의 경험과 그 의미를 분석해 보았다. 이를 위하여 노인 1405명 중 엄격한 기준으로 선발된 성공노화 노인 44명과 실패노화 노인 36명이 자유 응답한 면접 자료를 활용하여, 양적 분석과 질적 분석을 병행하였다. 분석결과 첫째, 노인들에게 가족은 인생을 회고할 때 가장 중요한 영역이다. 즉 가족은 성공적 노화와 무관하게 노인에게는 인생의 보람과 행복을 주는 가장 중요한 영역이었고, 특히 실패한 노인에게는 가장 후회되는 영역으로 나타났다. 둘째, 성공한 노인들은 인생의 의미와 목적을 타인을 돕고, 사회에 봉사하며, 의미있는 관계를 조성하는 등 보다 높은 차원의 욕구와 관련하여 인생을 회고한다면, 실패한 노인들은 당장 느끼는 건강상의 고통과 가족관계의 실패와 이로 인한 고독, 빈곤 등 현재 느끼는 현실적인 어려움과 관련하여 인생을 회고하고 있다. 셋째, 성공한 노인들은 자신이 살아온 인생 전반에 대해서 보람을 느끼고, 과거 특정 행동을 후회하고 있다면, 실패한 노인은 과거 특정시기에 인생의 행복을 느꼈으며, 현재는 살아온 인생전반에 대해서 후회를 하는 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 연구의 함의와 성공적 노화여부에 따른 사회적 지원, 특히 정신건강 면에서 취약한 실패노인들에 대한 개입방법이 논의되었다.

The purpose of the study is to examine reflections of the elderly on their life course and how they evaluate their life success. The relationship between their reflection(how they reflect) and their psychological well being(happiness) is analyzed by comparing two groups: the "success" group and the "unsuccess" group. From 1405 elders, 44 were selected for the "success" group and 36 for the "unsuccess" group according to rigorous criteria. They were interviewed and the data was analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The findings are as follows. First, family is the most important part of the elderly's life reflection. Both the "success" group and the "unsuccess" group review that family has fulfilled their life or has made it happy, while "unsuccess" group consider family to be the most regrettable area. Second, the seniors of the "success" group give meaning to their life in the higher level of needs such as helping others and contributing to the society. On the contrary, the "unsuccess" group evaluated their lives based on the practical difficulties such as broken family relationships, loneliness and poverty. Third, the "success" group consider their lives to be generally successful and regret about specific events in the past, while "the unsuccess" regret about their entire lives in general and think that their happy days are limited in specific periods in the past. Finally, the implications of the study along with the intervention strategy for the "unsuccess group" who are vulnerable to the mental health problems are discussed.
