Electrochemical Preparation of Pt-based Catalyst on Carbon Paper Treated by Sn Sensitization and Pd Activation

- Abstract
- CoRuPt/Pd and CoPtRu/Pd catalysts were prepared on a carbon paper with Sn sensitization, Pd activation, Co electrodeposition and galvanic displacement. Sn-Pd treatment on carbon paper was conducted to enhance its hydrophilic property related to nucleation of following Co electrodeposition process. The Co particles were formed on Sn-Pd treated carbon paper with varying deposition potential and time. Then, Pt and Ru galvanic displacement were performed to obtain CoRuPt/Pd and CoPtRu/Pd catalysts. Following electrochemical measurement indicated that the CoRuPt - 1 catalyst which had 1.02 of Pt/Ru surface molar ratio showed peak potential of 741 mV (vs. RHE) for methanol oxidation and 637 mV (vs. RHE) for carbon monoxide stripping, respectively. These values were 80 and 8 mV lower than those of a PtRu/C commercial catalyst.
