국가 정체성과 다문화주의, 그 위험한 관계 -프랑스의 경우-

Abstract

본고의 목적은 프랑스의 경우를 통해, 국가정체성과 다문화주의의 관계를 고찰하는 데 있다. 프랑스는 근대 이후 급속도로 유입되었던 이민자들을줄곧 동화와 통합정책으로 통치하려고 했다. 다시 말해, 동화와 통합은 프랑스식으로 다문화주의를 해석한 결과물인 것이다. 프랑스의 이런 정책적 기조에도 불구하고, 프랑스 정치인들은 이민자들과 그 후손들을 계속해서 국가의 문제점으로 지적해 왔다. 니콜라 사르코지는 최근 들어 더욱 격화되고있는 이슬람과 미국이 대표하는 서구사회의 갈등을 교묘하게 이용했다. 그가 제시한 중요한 정치적 아젠다는 국가정체성의 확립이었다. 프랑스 사람들이 가지는 다양한 정체성들 중 가장 우선시 되어야 할 것이 바로 국가정체성인 것이다. 이런 상황에서 다문화주의는 프랑스에서 환영받지 못하는단어가 되었고, 이민자들이 겪는 사회적 차별은 아직도 여전하다.

The purpose of this article is to consider the relationship between national identity and multiculturalism through the case of France. France has been putting in the effort to assimilate and to integrate the immigrants ever since the modern times. In other words, assimilation and integration are the result of interpreting multiculturalism in a French way. Despite France's policy stance, French politicians have continued to point out that immigrants and their descendants are national problems. Nicolas Sarkozy has slyly exploited the conflicts between Islam and the Western world, which have become more intense in recent years. His important political agenda was the establishment of national identity. One of the most important of the various identities of French people is national identity. In this situation, multiculturalism has become an unacceptable word in France, and the social discrimination suffered by immigrants is still present.
