개화기 시조의 일탈–『大韓每日申報』 소재 시조를 중심으로-

Abstract

본고는 개화기 시조가 고시조의 형식적 정형성과 내용적 서정성에서 상당부분 일탈(변화)하는 면모를 보이고 있음에 주목하여, 우리 시조의 전통 계승과 단절이라는 측면에서 개화기 시조를 살펴보고자 한 시도이다. 지면 상 개화기 시조 전체를 대상으로 하기 어렵기에, 가장 많은 386 수의 개화기 시조를 수록하고 있는 『大韓每日申報』를 연구의 대상으로 삼았다. 주지하듯이 우리 시조는 형식적으로 3장 6구 12음보의 정형시이기 때문에, 이러한 형식을 따르지 않는 작품을 오롯이 시조라 부르기는 어려울 것이다. 아울러 시조는 내용적인 측면에서는 외부세계로 인하여 촉발된 감정을 시인 스스로에게로 수렴하는 서정의 문학이다. 따라서 형식과 내용이 고시조의 전통을 고스란히 계승하지 못한 개화기 시조는 곧 일탈적 성격을 가지는 일련의 작품군이라 부를 수 있을 것으로 사료된다. 우선 개화기 시조는 그 형식적인 측면에서 일제 강점기라는 특수한 시대 상황에서 항일과 독립 쟁취의 분위기를 조성하는데 주안점을 둔 나머지, 종장 제 4음보를 생략함으로 인하여 각장 4음보격의 시조 정형성에서 일탈하는 양상을 보여준다. 이는 시조 종장의 네 음보가 갖는 형식미학에서 벗어난 것으로 이후 현대시조로 이어지는 과정에서 시조의 정형성이 훼손되는 하나의 요인으로 작용했다고 볼 수 있다. 다음으로 내용적인 측면에서 개화기 시조는 서정시로서의 본분에서 벗어나 개화기라는 특수한 시대논리를 담는 목적문학으로 변모하는 양상을 보여준다. 시대문학으로서의 시조가 갖는 특수성을 인정한다고 하더라도 386수의 작품 중 96%에 해당하는 373수의 작품이 항일, 자주독립에의 염원, 문명개화의 열망 등 특정한 주제를 담는 데에 편향되었다는 것은 개화기 시조를 서정문학으로서의 오롯한 그것으로 보기 어려운 이유가 된다. 이상으로 말미암아 필자는 개화기 시조를 ‘일탈의 시조’로 규정하였으며, 이러한 일탈은 바로 고시조의 전통이 현대시조로 고스란히 계승되지 못한 전통 단절의 문제와 관련을 갖는다고 볼 수 있을 것이다.

This paper focuses on the fact that the Sijo (a traditional Korean genre) of poetry in the Enlightenment period of Korea deviates considerably from the formality and sentiment of earlier-time Sijo, and seeks to examine such development in terms of the traditional succession and disconnection of the Korean Sijo. To that purpose, Daehanmaeilsinbo Newspaper, which contains the largest number of works, was selected as the study subject for convenience’s sake. Since the Korean Sijo is a fixed-form poem type consisting of 3 chapters, 6 phrases and 12 metres, so works that do not follow this form would not be considered Sijo. In addition, in terms of contents, Sijo is a lyric literature that converges emotions triggered by the subject into the poet himself. Therefore, pieces of Sijo in the Enlightenment period may be called a group of an array of works with the characteristics of deviation whose form and contents failed to inherit the entire tradition of earlier-time Sijo. First, in terms of its formative aspect, the Sijo during the Enlightenment period shows that they deviated from the 12 metre-Sijo formalism by omitting the four metres of the ending chapter, while focusing on creating an atmosphere of anti-Japan mood and recovering Korea’s independence in the special situation under the Japanese colonial rule of Korea. This is a departure from the formal aesthetics of the four metres of the last chapter of Sijo, and in the following process of leading to the modern Sijo style, such deviation is deemed to be one of factors that damaged the formalism of Sijo. Second, in terms of contents, the Sijo during the Enlightenment period was deviated from the mainstream genre of lyric poetry and changed into the objective literature which contained the special logic of the era. 373 of the 386 pieces of work were biased to include specific themes such as anti- Japanese sentiment, desire for independence, and aspiration for civilization flowering, making it difficult to see the Sijo during the Enlightenment as a lyric literature. Therefore, this paper sought to define the Sijo in the Enlightenment period as the “Sijo of the deviation”, and this deviation is regarded as related to the disconnection of the tradition that the entire tradition of earlier-time Sijo was not succeeded to the modern Sijo.
