18세기 향촌 문화와 반구옹의 <영언십이장> 종장 고찰 -통사구조와 의미기능을 중심으로-

Abstract

본고는 반구옹의 <영언십이장>을 대상으로 하여 초･중장과는 변별되는시조 종장을 통사구조와 의미기능에 초점을 맞추어 고찰한 연구이다. 우리가 시조의 시조다움을 제대로 파악하고, 이를 통해 궁극적으로 작품을 오롯이 이해하기 위해서는 시적문맥의 통일과 시상의 전환, 그리고 종결에 초점을 맞추어 작품을 읽어낼 필요가 있다. 그런데 여기에서 무엇보다 중요한것이 바로 시조의 종장이라 할 수 있는데, 이와 관련해서는 선행 연구들을통해서도 그 중요성을 충분히 확인할 수 있는 바이다. 하지만, 4개의 음보로이루어진 시조 종장의 각 음보들이 갖는 통사적인 특징과 그 의미기능을본격적으로 살핀 연구가 많지 않다는 점을 감안할 때, 본고의 연구 의의를다소나마 인정받을 수 있으리라 생각된다. 우선 종장 제1음보는 초･중장에서 이어져 온 시상이 전환되는 곳이라는점에 주목할 필요가 있다. 그런데 필자가 선행 연구를 통해 해당 텍스트의시상 전환 양상을 수렴과 확산, 공간과 시간이라는 측면에서 살핀 바 있어본고에서는 본격적인 논의를 생략하였다. 다음으로 제2음보는 시조에 있어서 화자가 작시 배경, 즉 주제표출에 해당되는 제3음보에 앞서서 그것의 대상이나 원인으로서의 역할을 한다고 보았다. 이를 위해 제2음보는 나머지 음보와는 달리 과음보로서의 면모를 띄게 되는데, 이는 초･중장에서 흘러온 시상을 집약함과 함께, 촉급하게 연행하도록 의도하여 시적인 긴장감을 유발하기 위한 것으로, 이른바 장면화와대상화라는 측면에서 고유한 의미를 지닌 다고 볼 수 있겠다. 종장 제3음보는 화자가 작품을 통해서 드러내고자 하는 중심 뜻이 담긴곳이라고 할 수 있다. 특히 이곳에서는 그 동안의 先短後長의 구조가 先長 後短으로 역전되는 곳으로 이는 제3음보에서 시적 화자의 의지를 드러내면서 시상의 종결을 예비하기 위한 일종의 장치라고 보았다. 끝으로 제4음보는 시상이 종결되는 곳으로 본 텍스트에서는 그것의 유형을 크게 영탄형 종결과 의지형 종결의 둘로 나누어 살펴보았다. 이는 반구옹 신지가 작품 활동을 한 18세기라는 시간적 배경과 향촌이라는 공간적배경이 갖는 특수성과의 관계성 속에서 그 의미를 부여할 수 있었다. 그 동안 학계에서 자주 논의되지 않았던 반구옹의 <영언십이장> 종장 각음보를 고찰한 본고가 향후 연시조 작품들을 통사구조와 의미기능이라는관점에서 지속적으로 살펴볼 수 있는 하나의 방법론으로서 일정한 역할을할 수 있기를 기대하는 바이다.

This study examines Ban Gu-ong's <Yeongeonsipijang> with focus on the sentence structure and semantic function of the end verse of Sijo (an ancient Korean poetry genre) which is distinguished from the initial and middle verses. In order to grasp Sijo's sincerity and ultimately understand Sijo, we need to focus on the unification of poetic context, the transformation of poetic idea, and conclusion. However, what is more important than this is the end verse of Sijo. The significance of this study is that it examines the sentence characteristics and semantic function of each meter of Sijo's final verse composed of 4 metres, while there are not many studies in this regard. First of all, this study skipped the full discussion of the first metre of the final verse because we studied the conversion pattern of the poetic idea of the text through the previous research. The second meter was seen as the preceding object or cause of the third meter where Sijo's theme appears. To this end, the second meter, unlike the rest of the metres, appears to be an excessive meter, which is considered to have a unique meaning in terms of so-called sceneization and targeting. The third meter is a place where the speaker has a central will to expose through his work. In particular, in the third meter, the structure of a short front and long end is reversed to the structure of a long front and short end, which is seen as a kind of mechanism for preparing the conclusion of the poetic image while revealing the will of the poetic speaker. Finally, the fourth meter is where the poetic image is terminated. As such, in this text, its type is divided into two types: exclamation type and will type. This is meaningful in relation to the specificity of the rural area of the 18th century in which the author worked.
