동적역량을 통해 살펴본 제약기업의 양면적 혁신에 대한 사례 연구

Abstract

급변하는 경영 환경에서 기업의 기술혁신은 지속적인 경쟁 우위 확보, 수익 증대, 생존 및 성장 등과 직결되어 있는 매우 중요한 요소이다. 기술혁신은 일반적으로 새로운 기술이나 공정으로 새로운 시장을 개척하는 탐험적 혁신과기존 기술의 일부를 바꾸거나 개선한 활용적 혁신으로 나눌 수 있다. 최근 들어 기술 혁신을 수행하는 데 있어 변화하는 환경을 예측하여 기회를 포착함과 동시에 늘어나는 불확실성에 대처하기 위해서는 이 두 가지 혁신을 동시에추구하는 양면적 혁신을 추구해야한다는 주장이 많아지고 있다. 본 연구는 국내 제약기업 중 혁신형 제약기업으로 기술혁신 역량을 정부로부터 인정받은 부광약품을 대상으로 한양면적 혁신에 대한 사례연구이다. 본 연구에서는 기업의 공시자료와 내부자료 그리고 신문기사를 주요 토대로 하여2013부터 2020년까지의 부광약품의 양면적 혁신활동을 동적역량의 관점에서 살펴보고 두 혁신의 상충적 속성이 어떻게 조율되는가를 탐색하고자 하였다. 동적역량의 관점에서 볼 때, 부광약품은 해외 학회와 네트워킹 행사를 이용하여 새로운 기회를 탐색하고 자체적인기술개발과 해외 협업과 투자를 통하여 8건의 탐험적 혁신과 2건의 활용적 혁신에 노력을 기울여 온 것으로 나타났다. 또 조직분리 모델과 경영진의 조정을 통하여 상충적 속성의 두 기술혁신을 동시에 수행하는 과정에서 발생할 수있는 갈등을 조율하는 것으로 조사되었다.

Technological innovation is an important factor in securing a company’s sustainable competitive advantages, profits, survival, and growth in a dynamic environment. Technological innovations may be classified into two components: i) exploratory innovations spurring the development of new technologies or processes paving the way for novel business opportunities, and ii) exploitative innovations focusing on advancing the existing technology or processes. Studies suggest that when bringing technological innovation, a company must maintain ambidextrous innovation which pursues both exploitative innovation and exploratory innovation to sustain its business. When Bukwang Pharmaceutical’s top management changed in 2013, internal data generated from this year were collected to identify the company’s dynamic capabilities and understand each capability’s effect on technological innovations. Also, the company’s proprietary strategy in managing trade-off characteristics when conducting exploratory and exploitative innovation simultaneously was investigated. As the result, Bukwang “sense” both exploratory and exploitive innovation opportunities through international conferences and networking. And the Company seize total of 8 exploratory innovation opportunities and 2 exploitive opportunities. Those opportunities were screened and selected by the corresponding department in Bukwang. Bukwang orchestrated possible tension and conflict between two modes of innovation by “organization separation.”
