코리안 디아스포라 문학의 한인 청소년 재현 양상 연구

Abstract

이 논문은 코리안 디아스포라 문학이 재현하고 있는 한인 청소년의 모습을 살펴보는 것이다. 코리안 디아스포라 문학에 재현된 한인 청소년들은정도의 차이는 있지만, 부모세대와의 갈등, 정체성 혼란, 그리고 방치와 탈선 등으로 고통 받고 있다. 그중에서도 특히 이민 1.5세대들이 겪는 갈등과정체성 혼란이 유독 도드라지는데, 그것은 이들이 성장기에 자신의 의사와무관하게 또래집단으로부터 분리됨으로써 사회화 과정에 어려움을 겪었기때문이다. 정체성의 혼란에 직면한 대부분의 이민 1.5세대들은 두 가지 전략으로이 문제를 극복하려 한다. 하나는 부모의 나라나 전통에 대해 아예 무관심한 태도를 보이는 것이요, 다른 하는 전자와 달리 적극적으로 수용하고 재해석하는 방식으로 자신의 정체성을 새롭게 구축하는 것이다. 코리안 디아스포라 문학에는 이러한 이민 1.5세대들은 물론이고 다양한모습의 한인 청소년이 등장하는데, 이들의 모습은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 한인 1.5세대 청소년들은 자식을 위해 이민을 택했다는 부모의 공언에도 불구하고 정작 성장기의 중요한 시기에 부모로부터 적절한 사회적지지를 받지 못한다. 이로 인해 이들은 코리안 디아스포라 사회가 그들에게 기대하였던 세대간의 갈등과 마찰을 해소하는 문화적 가교의 역할을 수행하기 보다는 비행과 탈선으로 추락하는 것으로 형상화 되고 있다. 둘째, 한인 2세대 청소년들은 1세대인 부모들과 달리 스스로를 현지인으로 인식하고 있다. 한인 2세대들은 외모 때문에 ‘아시아인도 유럽인도 아닌어정쩡하게 살 수 밖에 없다’거나 ‘남의 나라에 얹혀사는 게 이민자의 도리에 합당’하다는 기성세대의 인식을 단호히 배격한다. 그들은 유럽인으로유럽에서 살기를 소망하는 정희의 다짐처럼 세상을 있는 그대로 받아들이고 현지인과 적극적인 동화를 모색한다. 셋째, 부모가 청소년기인 아이들만 남겨 놓고 돈을 벌기 위해 이주한 경우, 홀로 남겨진 한인 청소년들은 올바른 사회화 과정을 거치지 못한 채 부모의 돈과 자신의 미래를 소진하면서 스스로를 고립화시키는 모습을 보여주고 있다. 이상의 논의를 통해 우리는 이주가 청소년의 사회화 과정에 부정적인 영향을 미친 다는 점을 확인할 수 있었다. 코리안 디아스포라 청소년에 대한보다 세심한 접근과 관심이 필요한 이유가 여기에 있다.

This paper aims to examine the image of the youth which the literature of Korean Diaspora is reproducing. The adolescents recreated in the literature of Korean Diaspora are suffering from conflicts with their parents, confusion of identity, negligence and deviation and so on although there are differences in degree. Among those, conflicts and identity confusion experienced by the 1.5-generation immigrants are severe because they were separated from their peer group that is the driving forces of socialization regardless of their will during their period of growth. The 1.5-generation immigrants faced with the confusion of their identities newly build their identities in a way that they take a totally indifferent strategy for their parents' country or vice versa actively accepting and reinterpreting tradition. The following is a picture of the Korean youth which the literature of Korean Diaspora is reproducing. First, despite the parents' declaration that they chose to immigrate for their children, the 1.5 generation Korean adolescents are depicted as failing to fulfill the cultural bridging role that resolves conflicts and frictions among the generations that the Korean Diaspora society expected them to have by not receiving adequate social support from parents during the critical period of growth. Second, the second-generation Korean adolescents recognize themselves as locals, unlike the first-generation parents. The second-generation Koreans strongly dismiss the recognition of the older generation that because of their appearance, ‘they have no choice but to live an obscure life that is neither Asian nor European’, or that 'It is appropriate for immigrants to depend on the other country'. They accept the world as it is, and look for active assimilation with the locals, as shown by the promise of Jung Hee, who aspires to live in Europe as a European. Third, if parents leave their children only with adolescence and move to earn money, the Korean adolescents left alone are isolating themselves by exhausting their parents' money and their future without going through the correct socialization process. In this way, we can confirm that immigration has a negative effect on the process of socialization of the youth. This is why we need careful attention and approach to the youth in the literature of Korean Diaspora.
