- Abstract
Zhang Binglin(1868–1936) was a Chinese philologist, textual critic, philosopher in late Qing Dynasty. His theory of an ideal society is one of the most distinctive idea in Modern China. He, also known as a revolutionary theorist, presented a republicanism as an ideal political system from actual prospect of politics. His ultimate goal was to put an end to regime of Qing dynasty, and to establish a republican nation. Republicanism is a political system which was based on public opinion, reflects anti-capitalism and a direct democracy with resolving limits of representative system.
Especially a separation of five powers is the most distinctive idea in his political design. In addition to the three powers(administration, legislation, jurisdiction), the idea that education and inspection should be independent from these political powers, has an important influence on constituting political system of the Republic of China. He had a dream of anarchism, anti-nationalism with establishment of republicanism. A ultimate goal of Utopia which he dreamed was a world of "Wu(無)", that there are no government, no nation, no humankind.
From this point, his theory of ideal society has two aspects of affirmative and negative forms. Most of modern chinese philosophers such as Kang Youwei, Liang Qichao, Sun Wen had srtong convictions of an ideal society. whereas, Zhang Bing lin presented a theory of an ideal society, which was different from other theories. With a way of negation and doubt, he showed a belief of human ideals.
