- Abstract
- This study examined the influence of Korean drinking culture and perceived attitude toward alcohol on college students' drinking practices. For the purposes of the study, information on risky drinking behavior, attitude toward drinking, perception on Korean drinking culture were collected from a total of 612 college students through a survey. Results indicated that 93% of respondents were drinkers, 36% of which were categorized as risky drinkers (consuming more than 5 drinks at a given time and has been drunk more than once over the past 2 weeks). The comparison between risky and non-risky drinkers showed that risky group endorsed more permissive attitude toward drinking. Results from hierarchical regression showed that being male, having less knowledge about alcohol effects, and having more permissive attitude toward alcohol predicted alcohol consumption. And being male and having more permissive attitude toward alcohol predicted risky drinking practices. Implications of the study findings include developing alcohol prevention programs for university students in general (since most of them are drinkers), and developing programs specifically focusing on reducing positive attitude toward alcohol. The need for alternative leisure activities among college population is also suggested.
