북극해항로를 활용하는 철광석 운송의 경제성

Abstract

북극해항로의 경제성에 대해서는 국내외 학계를 중심으로 여러가지 주장이 제기되고 있다. 현재 북극해항로를 이용하여 철광석을 운송하는 선형은 파나막스 선형이다. 파나막스 선형은 케이프 선형대비 수익성 측면에서 한계가 있지만, 파나막스 선형을 활용하는 북극해항로 철광석 운송사례가 늘어나고 있다. 본 논문은 케이프 선박에 편중된 철광석 운송시장에서, 북극해항로를 활용하는 파나막스급 선박 운항의 경제성분석을 수행한다. 기존 연구의 자료와 국내 해운업체의 자료를 활용하는 경제성분석 모형을 적용하였다. 경제성분석 결과, 기존 수에즈 운하 대비 북극해항로를 이용했을 경우 비용측면에서 효과가 있으며 경제성이 있을 수 있음을 확인하였다. 우리나라 선사는 북극해항로의 운항가능기간 변화를 보면서 파나막스 내빙선박의 건조와 용선을 통한 북극해항로 진출을 검토할 필요가 있다.

Purpose : There are various arguments about economic feasiblity of the Arctic shipping route. We want to show the economic feasibility of the Panamax vessel of Arctic shipping route with relatively low volatility in the tramp market with high volatility. This aims to minimize the risk of shipping companies in newbuilding and charter contracts.

Research design, data and methodology : Using actual data from shipping companies and existing papers, this study makes a mathematical economic analysis of Arctic shipping for shipping company.

Results : In iron ore transportation with Panamax vessel, the Arctic shippign route can have economic feasibility compared to Suez route.

Conclusions : This study show the economic feasibility of the Panamax class with low volatility in Arctic shipping route in tramper market conditions with high volatility. Shipping companies need to plan to build an ice class vessel while watching the chage in the available transit period.
