- Abstract
- This paper aims to analyze Marguerite Duras’ works based on Hélène Cixous’ theory. Hélène Cixous is a representative thinker who embodied the theory of ‘Feminine writing’, the core of French feminism in the 1970s. She insisted that women establish independent femininity away from femininity otherized and objectified by men. As examples of this study, we will present Marguerite Duras' Moderato Cantabile and L’Amant. Both works commonly show the ability of women to immerse and accept others, and to self-expand through this. Here we can see that women, by extension, humans, are not just fixed beings, but beings who can have diverse and variable egos. In conclusion, the primary purpose of feminine writing is to restore women's own subjectivity, but the ultimate purpose is to give voices and restore subjectivity to all minorities unilaterally defined and alienated by dominant ideology as well as women.
