‘장르융합’을 통한 월드 뮤직의 세계화: NPR의 ‘Tiny Desk Concert’를 중심으로*

Abstract

본 연구의 목적은 월드 뮤직의 성공 사례들이 갖는 음악적 특징과 전략을 살펴보고 이로써 국악의 세계화에 접목시킬 수 있는 방안을 찾아보는 데 있다. 이를 위해 NPR Music의 ‘Tiny Desk Concert’에서 2008년 4월부터 2020년 5월까지 공연한 월드 뮤직 중 조회수 100만 이상과 이하의 팀으로 추출하여 분석하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 자메이카 레게와 라틴 음악이 상위 그룹에 속했으며 이들은 모두 ‘장르융합’을 통한 대중적 성향이 강했다. 이들 음악은 확고한 매니아층을 겨냥하거나 모던한 감각으로 젊은층을 겨냥했다. 남미는 공용어인 스페인어를 중심으로 멕시코, 아프로-쿠반, 아르헨티나, 콜롬비아 등의 음악을 폭넓게 융합하고 있었다. 연구 결과를 통해 자메이카와 남미의 음악이 R&B, Hip Hop, Jazz, Rock 등의 대중음악 장르와 융합하여 하나의 독자적인 장르로 발전된 모델이 21세기 우리 국악이 나아가야 방향이라는 것을 알 수 있었다. 이런 측면에서 한국의 전통 음악이 세계화를 꿈꾼다면 월드 뮤직의 진보적 음악가들이 시도했던 다양한 융합과 실험을 통한 변화가 필요할 것이다.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the musical characteristics and strategies of the success cases of world music, and to find a way to apply it to the globalization of Korean traditional music. To this end, among the world music performed from April 2008 to May 2020 at NPR Music’s ‘Tiny Desk Concert’, it was extracted and analyzed as teams with more than 1 million views and less. The results of the study are as follows. Jamaican reggae and Latin music belonged to the top group, and they all had strong public tendencies through genre fusion. These musics are aimed at the firm enthusiast or the younger with a modern sense. South America was a broad fusion of music from Mexico, Afro-Cuban, Argentina, and Colombia, centering on Spanish, the official language. Through the research results, it was found that the model developed into a unique genre by fusion of music from Jamaica and South America with popular music genres such as R&B, Hip Hop, Jazz, and Rock is the direction for Korean traditional music in the 21st century. In this respect, if Korean traditional music dreams of globalization, it will be necessary to change through various convergences and experiments attempted by progressive musicians of world music.
