- Abstract
- This paper demonstrated the ability of the Genre-specific Frequency Deviation Index to detect collocations that involve peculiarities and thus require translators to take a more careful approach when attempting to make sense of what they mean and use them in their translation work. To this end, the top 30 collocations of the adjective swift and nouns were listed in terms of frequency of use using the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) and then subject to qualitative analysis. Among them were proper nouns and ones predominantly used in specific fields or contexts, and these collocations were found to exhibit a relatively high Genre-specific Frequency Deviation Index. Thus, a diachronic approach was considered, and an index called the Diachronic Frequency Deviation Index was newly devised which represents how different the frequency of these collocations in each of the time periods defined in COCA is from the corresponding frequency pattern of the adjective swift. The effectiveness of this index was then examined and confirmed.
