Abstract
The luminance and the luminous efficiency improvement is a key issue for an alternative current plasma display panel (AC-PDP). We suggested a new combination of the optimal mixture gas in AC-PDP. The influences of a small amount addition of Ar or Kr into Ne (96 %)-Xe (4 %) and He (70 %)-Ne (27 %)-Xe (3 %) were experimentally investigated for the surface discharge of AC-PDP. When a small amount of Ar ( 0.01 - 0.1 %) or Kr ( 0.01 - 0.1 %) was added to Ne-Xe or He-Ne-Xe, it was observed that the luminance increased over 20 % and the luminous efficiency increased over 25 % at 200 Torr. Our results showed that the increase of the,Penning electrons for the small amount addition of Ar or Kr improved the luminance and the luminous efficiency and also caused the increase of the wall charge ( 15 - 25 %), which makes the firing voltage to decrease, and then the decrease of the consumption power in AC-PDP.
