Abstract
The purpose of this experimental study was to investigate the effect of horizontal shear reinforcement and to grasp the conservatism of ACI Building Code clauses dealing with shear friction in R.C. deep beams. The main variables are the concrete compressive strength, shear span-to-overall depth ratio, and horizontal shear reinforcement ratio. We made a comparison of between the provisions of Section 11.8 of ACI 318-99 and the test results in corporation with existing data. Based on these analyses, conclusions and concerns regarding the shear behavior of deep beams with horizontal shear reinforcement only are presented.
