- Abstract
- This study aims to present optimal design strategies of vault-type monitor windows in art museums by evaluating its daylight performance through computer simulation. Field measurement and scale-model experiment were conducted to validate the applicability of the computer model. It was found that the current practice of vault-type monitor window design for daylighting in art museum was improper. The result of the computer simulation presented a number of design strategies which ensure comfortable and safe daylighting in art museums. The computer simulation indicated that the glazing area of 15% percent of floor area was suitable for art museums. The height of light well and window sill of monitor windows affected the uniformity of illumination distribution. The aperture ratio of 1:2 would be suitable for light wells. To utilize daylighting in display rooms, the ceiling height should be at least 6 m. At same glazing area, it was desirable to provide more windows with small size than one or two big-sized windows.
