자본주의 역사와 역사·제도적 조건 — 세계금융위기 이후 ‘다사건 사회학’과 ‘통합된 비교’의 대화

Abstract

본 연구는 2007-09년 세계금융위기 이후 사회사/역사사회학의 중요성이 더욱 커졌음을 보여주는 이론적 사례로서 윌리엄 스웰 2세의 자기비판과 ‘통합된 비교’의 대화를 검토한다. 역사사회학에서 ‘다사건적 시간성’의 중요성을 강조했던 윌리엄 스웰 2세는 세계금융위기 이후 자기비판을 통해 자본주의의 시간성을 고민한다. 자기비판의 핵심은 반복-회귀하는 추상적 시간성을 ‘다사건성’에 포함하는 것이었다. 이 과정에서 스웰은 월러스틴이 아닌 아리기를 주요한 참조점으로 삼아 자신이 ‘목적론적 시간성’으로 규정했던 월러스틴과의 간접적인 화해를 시도한다. 한편 세계체계 분석에서 필립 맥마이클의 ‘통합된 비교’로 대표되는 월러스틴 이후의 역사적 자본주의 논자들은 자본 에 대한 재독해를 통해 스웰이 강조한바 누적성과 우연성을 ‘역사적 자본주의’ 연구의 중심으로 끌어왔으며, 역사적 자본주의를 구체적 총체성 개념으로 이해하게 되었다. 두 논의는 마르크스의 ‘재생산’ 논의를 통해 해후할 수 있으며, 이 대화를 통해 우리는 현시기 역사사회학의 과제로 자본주의 체계의 재생산에 기여하는 구체적인 제도, 또는 역사·제도적 조건에 대한 분석의 필요성을 인식할 수 있다. 역사사회학은 이러한 대화를 검토함으로써 코로나19 바이러스, 미국과 서유럽 자유주의 정치체의 동요, 러시아-우크라이나 전쟁과 동아시아 지정학의 변화 등 장기적·체계적 역사변동의 문제에 적절한 질문을 제기할 수 있다.

This study examines William Sewell Jr’s criticism of his own former stances on historical sociology in light of the global financial crisis, and his dialogue with “incorporated comparisons”. Sewell Jr., who emphasized “eventful temporality” in historical sociology, engages in self-criticism after the global financial crisis. He accepts that historical sociological approaches that avoided the temporality question of capitalism had important weaknesses. Historical sociology after the 1980s gradually passed the study of economic life to cliometrics and moved into the realm of cultural-historical study by neglecting the recurrent temporalities of capitalism. By addressing this weakness in historical sociology, Sewell Jr. attempts to indirectly reconcile with Immanuel Wallerstein, whose temporality he previously regarded as “teleological”, through reference to Giovanni Arrighi’s work. Philip McMichael and Giovanni Arrighi’s comparative method of “incorporated comparison” stands out as important interlocuter with eventful sociology since both approaches emphasizes multiple overlapping temporalities. The implications of this fruitful dialogue between two approaches lies in the importance of analyzing the ‘historical-institutional conditions’ of capitalism to understand concrete and specific capitalist history.
