자산의 세대 간 유사성에 관한 연구 : 순자산과 부동산자산을 중심으로

Abstract

본 연구는 분위수 회귀모형을 활용한 실증분석을 통해, 자녀의 자산 분위에 따라 부모-자식 간 상관성이 계층에 따라 차별적으로 나타나는지를 살펴보고자 한다. 이를 위해 자녀 세대를중심으로 ‘자산을 많이 소유한 계층’과 ‘자산을 적게 소유한 계층’ 간 부모 세대의 영향력이 어떻게 나타나는지에 대한 실증분석을수행하였다. 특히, 가구의 실질적인 부를 의미하는 ‘순자산(net worth)’과 자산에서 가장 큰 비중을 차지하는 ‘부동산자산(real estate assets)’에 초점을 맞추었다. 두 가지 자산을 별도로 구분하는 이유는, 순자산은 부채(liabilities)가 함께 고려된다는 점에서 순자산과 부동산자산 간에는 세대 간 유사성이 서로 다르게 나타날 수 있기 때문이다. 또 다른 이유로는, 부동산자산이 갖는 특징으로 인해 ‘순자산의 계층별 전이 패턴’과 ‘부동산자산의 계층별전이 패턴’이 다를 수 있다는 점도 고려하였다. 부동산자산은 부모 세대 생애주기의 후반부에서 증여나 상속의 형태로 이루어지는 경우가 빈번할 것으로 예상되기 때문이다. 이어지는 2장에서는 부의 세대 간 이전에 대한 이론적 논의를살펴보고 선행연구를 검토하였다. 다음으로 3장에서는 실증분석에 사용한 자료, 분석방법, 주요변수 등을 기술하였다. 4장에서는한국노동패널자료를 활용하여 순자산과 부동산자산의 세대 간 유사성에 대한 실증분석 결과를 기술하였다. 마지막으로 5장에서는실증분석 결과를 토대로 주요 연구결과 및 시사점을 제시하였다.

Economic inequality, which can be measured by the gaps in income or net worth between households, has persisted over several generations in South Korea. Previous research has argued that a positive link between the wealth of parents and children is one of the most important factors affecting the persistence of economic inequality over time. The purpose of this study is to investigate the association of both net worth and real estate assets between generations using the KLIPS (Korean Labor and Income Panel Study) data. Two quantile regressions were estimated to explore whether wealthy children are more likely to have wealthy parents. The main findings of this study showed that net worth correlations between generations are considerably greater as the net worth of children increases. However, there is no significant difference between subgroups of real estate assets. This difference may be due to the fact that much of the transmission of real estate wealth to the next generation occurs long after adult children have left their original home.
