Abstract
To observe the expression of the human P-Glycoprotein in tumor cells with clinical data and different pathologic findings of various malignant tumors, immunohistochemical studies were carried out by using avidin-biotin complex immunoperoxidase methods in paraffin embedded tissue sections from 55 cases. The studies consisted of 15 cases of colonic adenocarcinoma, 15 cases of gastric adenocarcinoma, 10 cases of renal carcinoma, 10 cases of bronchogenic carcinoma and 5 cases of germ cell tumors including choriocarcinoma and endodermal sinus tumors. The results were as follows : 1. P-Glycoprotein was found to be concentrated the apical surface and/or intracytoplasmic area of the noeplastic cell.s 2. The frequency of P-Glycoprotein expression in various malignant tumors observed in this study was 58%(32 out of all 55 cases) ; colonic adenocarcinoma (80%), gastric adenocarcinoma (53%), bronchogenic carcinoma(40%), renal carcinoma(60%) and germ cell tumors(80%). 3. Although P-Glycoprotein expression of moderately differentiated colonic adenocarcinoma was higher than that of other differentiated type, relationship between other clinical data and P-Glycoprotein expression was not observed. 4. P-Glycoprotein expression in gastric and renal carcinomas was not significantly correlated with clinical data including tumor size, degree of tumor extension and lymph node metastasis. 5. The immunohistochemical datection of P-Glycoprotein in tumor cells of lung and genital tract was hererogenously distributed. 6. Therefore, authors suggested that P-Glycoprotein expression was correlated with origin and differentiation of tumor cells.
