Abstract
Purpose: There are evidence that angiogenesis is a critical factor in the tumor progression and metastasis of soild tumors, including gastric cancers. Macrophages and mast cells are important effector cells producing a number of angiogenic factors. The purpose of this study was to investigate microvessel count(MVC), macrophage count(MPC) and mast cell count(MC)to determine whether the degree of count was related to the pathological parameters such as Lauren's classification, the depth of tumor cells invasion, and lymph node metastasis. Materials and Methods:Immunohistochemical stains using CD34for the endothelial surface marker, CD68 antigen, a specific marker for macrophage, and toluidine blue stain for mast cell were done in 103 patients with gastric adenocarcinoma who underwent curative tumor resection. Results: The MVC was significantly related to the depth of tumor invasopn and was higher in the lymph node metastatic group(p<0.05). The MPC was higher in diffuse type gastric carcinomas by Lauren's classification. A significant association was found between MVC and MPC(p<0.05). However, the MC were not correlated with any other pathologic parameters or MVD. Conclusion: These findings suggest that MVC may be a valuable method to predict tumor prognosis and MPC, not MC can act as one of the contributing factors to angiogenesis in gastric adenocarcinoma.
