Abstract
This study aimed to analyze mothers’ perceptions and demands regarding digital play in early childhood education institutions and to explore supportive plans for digital play through cooperative collaboration with home environments. To achieve this, group and individual interviews were conducted with nine mothers who had children with experience in digital play at early childhood education institutions. The findings revealed the following: First, mothers’ perceptions of digital play in early childhood education institutions were divided into categories such as “play with educational value vs. play for entertainment,” “play reflecting the child’s life vs. Showcase-style experience,” “confirming the possibility of safe digital play vs. concerns due to a high teacher-to-child ratio,” and “concerns for home use vs. confusion due to conflicting instructional approaches.” Second, mothers’ perceptions of changes in their children’s behavior after experiencing digital play included categories such as “active players,” “proactive problem solvers,” “fearless explorers,” “enjoyers of trial-and-error challenges,” and “self-regulating digital citizens.” Third, mothers expressed the need to enhance the activation of digital play in early childhood education institutions, including the need for “guidelines for safe digital play,” “systematization of digital play based on age and development,” “enhancement of teacher competence through social support,” “strengthening collaboration and communication with homes,” and “establishment of a safe digital play environment.”
