Abstract
Numerous studies in the field of facial reanimation surgery have been conducted by surgeons, basic research scientists, and bioengineers, and the clinical applications of various techniques have been reported. Nevertheless, these techniques remain inadequate in ensuring complete recovery of damaged nerves. However, a surgical method using the masseter nerve has shown a high success rate and satisfactory results in the recent literature. Various advanced surgical techniques have also been reported to reduce the morbidity of donors, with early functional nerve recovery. Furthermore, research is continuing into the cortical pathways related to cerebral adaptation with independent movement and natural functional recovery. More creative and developmental attempts are expected in the future. The focus of future research will be on nerve regeneration technology using nerve transfer, with the aim of enabling faster recovery and improving meaningful function and emotional facial movement. This article focuses on various facial reanimation surgery techniques, together with concepts of cerebral adaptation.
