- Abstract
In today’s society, diverse groups of people, including close to 2 million foreigners are co-existing in Korea. As the society is becoming increasingly diverse, PR practitioners are expected to understand the concept of diversity/inclusion and work with stakeholders from various backgrounds. Therefore, diversity and inclusion education in PR undergraduate programs is becoming a necessity in preparing future practitioners. Thus, the current study conducted 1:1 in-depth interviews with PR majors to understand how they make meaning of diversity and inclusion; what they learned from the PR education; and what they expect from the program in terms of diversity/inclusion. Results of the data show that PR majors consider D&I as not a matter of being right or wrong but accepting the differences; that which they understand but find it difficult to implement; and that the society has low level of diversity and inclusion. However, personal contacts has been found to make positive influence on D&I. Findings also show that participants remembered learning about D&I in their program through case studies, and perceived D&I education as a necessity, something everyone needs to learn these days.
And more important for PR majors because organizations need to be aware of diverse stakeholders; thus, participates suggested ways in which D&I in their education/department/ university could be strengthened. Based on research findings, the current study offers course/program recommendations, discusses implications and topics for future studies.
