- Abstract
This study analyzes the relationship between the quality of financial literacy of households and their financial activities, including debt-financing. Using a survey data, it reports that the financial literacy of an average Korean household head is lower thant of an average American. Furthermore, the paper shows that a certain level of financial literacy is crucial in managing debt burden within a reasonable range and confirms the importance of financial education programs. At the root of the recent worldwide financial crisis lays the problem of lack of information without accurate understanding of financial products and the financial market. In this sense, financial literacy is social capital and its provision needs to be in charge of the public sector and should serve as a starting line for the protection of financial consumers, which has recently emerged as the main topic in discussing financial supervision. Considering that the most effective policy to protect financial consumers is to foster smart financial consumers who are capable of protecting themselves, it is hoped that the result of this study would contribute to designing a financial education program which is being actively discussed recently.
