Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of child care experience on toddlers' vocabulary acquisition at age 3 with family’s demographic characteristics and home environments accounted for and to explore whether the effects were different for the families with different income levels. The study analyzed 1,672 children participating Panel Study on Korean Children. Data collected at phase 2, 3, and 4 were used. The correlation and multiple regression were carried out for three income groups. The results revealed that there were no significant difference in child-adult ratio, teacher education, and child-teacher interaction between the income groups whereas the groups were significantly different in the most of the other variables. For low-income families, academic stimulation at home was a significant predictor of children's expressive vocabulary scores. For middle-income families, children showed better vocabulary ability when the parents' education level was high and they spent less time at child care at age 3. Low child-adults ratio and academic stimulation at home significantly predicted the children's vocabulary development. The results implied that the effects of family’s demographic characteristics, child care experiences and home environment were different for families with different levels of income.
