구한말 근대스포츠의 도입과정에 관한 연구

Abstract

본 연구는 구한말 근대스포츠의 도입에 대한 실태를 재검토하는데 있다. 구한말의 근대스포츠는 1876년 강화도조약 체결이후 19세기말에서 20세기 초에 걸쳐 유럽과 미국, 일본으로부터 근대적인 신문화와 함께 도입되었다. 이들 근대스포츠는 주로 외국인들에 의해 도입되었는데 학교를 통해 과외활동과 대항경기, 그리고 스포츠단체의 활동을 통해 일반사회에 보급되면서 근대스포츠로서의 체제를 갖추었다. 그중에서 자전거는 생활에 필요한 도구로 사용하기 위해 도입되었다는 점이 주목할 만하다. 그러나 본 연구를 통해 구한말의 근대스포츠는 실제로 언제, 누구에 의해 도입되었는지 그 경로를 파악하기에는 한계가 있었다. 그 이유는 그동안 한국체육사연구의 부진한 성과와 새로운 자료발굴의 노력이 미진했기 때문이라고 생각한다.

This study reexamined the actual situation of introduction of modern sports. Modern sports was introduced with modern culture from Europe, United States and Japan during the late 19th century to early 20th century, after the conclusion of Japan-Korea treaty of 1876. This modern sports was introduced mainly by foreigners and established a system by a dissemination to the general public through school extracurricular, match and activity of sports organization. The introduction of bicycle is worthy of notice because it was introduced not only for the match but also for a real life tool. But there was a limitation to search how, when and by whom had modern sports introduced. The poor result of study on history of Korean physical education and no efforts to discover new data would be the main reason of this limitation.
