불을 활용한 퇴치적 주술의 모티프 변용 및 확장 연구 －<해가> 배경설화와 애니메이션 <블리치>를 중심으로－

Abstract

본고는 최근 다양한 양상으로 확장되고 있는 대중 서사 속 불에 관한 주술 모티프의 형상과 그 저변의 미의식 및 전략적 추이의 고찰에 목적을 둔다. 토테미즘과 샤머니즘에 뿌리를 내렸던 원시 인간들의 숭배사상은 신앙적인 측면을 초월해, 일상 곳곳의 의식에도 투영되어 왔다. 특히 불은 인류가 발견한 최초의 에너지인 동시에 소멸의 근간으로서, 당대의 사람들에게 어떤 영감을 주기에 이르렀다. 불이 불길한 기운을 잠재우고, 자신들을 위협하는 대상들에 대한 퇴치가 가능한 주술의 모태로서 다가왔던 것이다. 최근 대중서사 속의 주제의식 혹은 캐릭터에 이와 관련된 모티프가 지속적으로 개입, 확장되고 있는 것도 결국 불이 가지는 이러한 역사적 상징성에 기인하고 있다고 할 수 있다. 그러나 그것에서 배태되는 미의식과 문화계승적 측면에서의 퇴치적 주술이 가지는 가치 역시 간과할 수 없다. 때문에 불에 관한 주술 모티프가 최근의 대중 서사에 어떤 맥락으로 개입하고 위치하고 있는지를 파악하기 위해서는, 이러한 퇴치적 주술에 함의된 원리와 각각의 양상에 대한 통합적인 탐색이 수반되어야 한다. 이를 위해 논자는 불을 매개로 하는 퇴치적 주술을 술자 즉, 캐릭터에 본격적으로 투사하고 있는 최근의 영상 콘텐츠를 살펴보았다. 미디어 믹스 등을 통하여 그 영역을 적극 넓히고 있는 애니메이션은 여전히 수많은 고전적인 모티프들을 다루어 오고 있다. 특히 주술의 핵심인 말을, 모티프로 십분 활용하고 있는 점에서 같은 동아시아 문화권 작품인 <블리치>를 그 논의를 전개해 나가는 중심축으로 삼았다. 아울러 논거의 실마리를 주는 작품으로는 <해가>및 그 배경설화의 작품을 통해, 과거로부터 이어져 오는 불과 관련된 주술적 맥락을 확보하도록 했다. 나아가 이러한 이미지와 형상들이 현대적으로 어떻게 분화되고 있으며, 응용 가능한지도 함께 검토하도록 했다.

The purpose of this paper is to study the fire-related magic motif, aesthetic consciousness, and the motif’s strategic progression and expansion within popular narratives, focusing on animated game primitive mankind’s form of worship, which was based on totemism and shamanism, reflected people’s daily lives. As fire was the first-found energy and powerful tool, it greatly inspired people in early times. This led to the construction of the repelling magic motif, as fire was capable of eliminating the ominousness and threats of the dark. The recent involvement, or expansion, of the fire-related motif in the themes or characters of popular narratives results from the historical symbolism of fire. Also, aesthetic consciousness and the value of repelling magic as seen from the perspective of the cultural succession that germinates from the fire-related motif, should not be overlooked. Therefore, in order to understand how the fire-related magic motif is positioned within recent popular narratives, underlying fundamentals and various aspects of repelling magic should be explored. The writer investigated recent video contents where fire-related repelling magic is exhibited by the characters. Animation, which has been actively expanding its base through mixed media, includes various classic motifs. <Bleach>was analyzed in terms of its language, which is the core of magic. Also,<Haega>and its background folktale provided clues to the context and background of the notion of fire-related magic. How these images and forms are diversified with a modern twist and how they can be utilized discussed as well.
