- Abstract
- Many studies on structural behaviors of stainless steel structural members have been performed thanks to their superior material properties such as ductility, fire resistance and corrosion resistance. Austenitic stainless steels (STS304) with nickel have been used the most in building structure among stainless steel groups. This paper focused on the block shear fracture behavior of base metal in fillet-welded connection fabricated with austenitic stainless steel. Although the block shear behavior for welded connection due to stress triaxiality and shear-lag effect is different from that of bolted connection, the block shear strength equation of welded connection in current design specifications has been referred to that of bolted connection. Main parameters are weld length and welding method (Arc and TIG welding). It is known from test results that there was no big difference in ultimate strengths according to welding method. Predictions by current specifications (KBC, AISC and EC) and existing proposed equations were compared with those of test results. Most of strength equations underestimated overly test strengths and predictions by Oosterhof et al.’s equation was close to block shear strength of base metal in fillet-welded connections.
